Signs and Causes of a Weakened Heart Muscle

In a healthy heart, blood is pumped from the right side of the heart to the lungs, where it picks up oxygen. It is then pumped out of the left side of the heart to supply the body with oxygen and vital nutrients. Any condition that interrupts this two-chamber system can cause heart failure.

Many conditions can cause the heart to weaken. When the heart is weak, it is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. Conditions like diabetes, coronary heart disease, and high blood pressure damage or cause the heart to overwork, which can lead to heart failure.

There are numerous tests available to check heart function. | Echocardiogram, Heart function, Sonography

But the heart does have some ability to make new muscle and possibly repair itself. The rate of regeneration is so slow, though, that it can't fix the kind of damage caused by a heart attack. That's why the rapid healing that follows a heart attack creates scar tissue in place of working muscle tissue.   eResearch by Navid Ajamin -- spring 2022

How do I know if my heart is OK?

Your doctor will feel your pulse to check your heart rate and rhythm. Each pulse matches up with a heartbeat that pumps blood through your arteries. Finding out your pulse helps your doctor judge the strength of your blood flow and blood pressure in different areas of your body.
